Honoring Our Heroes-Special Events
in 2010, the Alabama Sports Festival’s Honoring Our Heroes honored Alabama’s Teachers and Educational Support Professionals. They were recognized during the Alabama Sports Festival’s Opening Ceremonies on Friday, June 18th, 2010 in the Arena at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC).
Teachers and educational support professionals who have served at least ten combined years in Alabama public, private, Christian, or home school programs, from preschool teachers through four year colleges and universities, were eligible to receive the Medal of Distinction. The Medal of Distinction was given to active and retired educators and was designed and minted exclusively for this special ceremony.
2009 Firefighters and EMS Personnel
The Alabama Sports Festival will be hosting several Regional Honoring Our Heroes Ceremonies honoring career Firefighters and EMS personnel. Anyone who has served in these capacities for at least 10 years is eligible to receive the appropriate medal. Also, a family member who has lost a loved one in any of the three catagories is eligible to receive the Medal of Sacrifice. This opportunity is being offered for those who were unable to attend and receive the medal during the 2009 Opening Ceremonies (Firefighters and EMS).

Alabama firefighters and emergency medical personnel were honored on live statewide television at the Alabama Sports Festival State Games XXVII Opening Ceremonies, June 19, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Arena.
The Alabama legislature passed a joint resolution, signed by Gov. Bob Riley, declaring June 19, 2009, as Alabama Firefighter and Emergency Medical Personnel Day. This date coincides with the Alabama Sports Festival�s Opening Ceremonies, where the Alabama Sports Festival will continue its Honoring Our Heroes program by recognizing the service and sacrifice of Alabama�s firefighters and emergency medical personnel.
Firefighters and EMS personnel with a minimum of ten years of service were eligible to receive the Medal of Service. The Medal of Service is for active, volunteer, retired, disabled, or deceased firefighters and EMS personnel.
The Medal of Sacrifice was presented on behalf of all firefighters and EMS personnel killed in the line of duty, regardless of their length of service, and was presented to a family member. Both medals are designed and minted exclusively for this special ceremony.

To best honor firefighters and EMS personnel, the Alabama Sports Festival created a state advisory committee, comprised of firefighting and EMS professionals and veterans, to assist in making the 2009 Honoring Our Heroes program something that all Alabama firefighters and EMS personnel would appreciate and enjoy. The committee has been invaluable in many aspects of the planning, particularly in the crafting of the medals (seen above) to be awarded at the ceremony. The Alabama Sports Festival staff expresses great appreciation for all the input and dedication of the 2009 Honoring Our Heroes - Firefighters & EMS Personnel State Advisory Committee. The Alabama Sports Festival�s Honoring Our Heroes series is part of its commitment to teach Alabama student-athletes good citizenship by highlighting the sacrifices made by others to keep our country a free and safe society.
- Korean War veterans and family members of those disabled or killed in action in that war.
- New York City firefighters and police officers for their dedicated service surrounding the September 11, 2001 tragedies.
- Alabama military service members who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11 and family members of those disabled or killed in action in the war.
- Alabama law enforcement officers.
- Alabama Firefighters and EMS Personnel.
