The 2009 Alabama Sports Festival State Games were a huge success and it would have never been possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers. To all the tournament directors, commissioners, coaches, parents, officials and hundreds of volunteers, we say thank you for a job well done! And to all the athletes who competed, congratulations on your great accomplishments and keep on 'Going For Gold!'

Crissy Ahmann, the Co-Captain of the 1992 Olympic Swim Team and Gold medal winner, stopped by the Shelby County YMCA to speak to members of the Birmingham YMCA Swim Teams. Crissy was able to share about her Olympic experience and the hard work she put in when starting in the YMCA programs as a young swimmer to become the top female swimmer in the world and Olympic champion. Also, the swimmers were able to try on her Olympic medals!!

Age Divisions

Age determination date is June 20, 2010. Proof of age is required. Birth certificate, Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) eligibility list, Military I.D. and/or driver�s license are acceptable proof-of-age documents. Do not mail or hand-deliver any proof-of-age documents to the Alabama Sports Festival. The coach/participant should have proof-of-age documents on hand at the event site. In case of eligibility disputes, lack of proper documentation will result in disqualification of individual participants.

Youth

  • 8 & Under
  • 9 - 10
  • 11 - 12
  • 13 - 14
  • 15 - 18

US Masters Swimming

As a �recognized� USMS competition, USMS Swimmers must show USMS registration card on day of the event in order to compete. All registered USMS swimmers� times are eligible for Top Ten records. Swimmers who are not registered with USMS may also swim in the Masters Swimming competition without having to register with USMS. Non-registered swimmers� times will not be elegible for USMS Top Ten records.

Age determination date is June 20, 2010.

Masters Swimming

  • Ages 19 - 99 broken into five year increments.

Proof of age is required. Birth certificate, Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) eligibility list, Military I.D., driver�s license, or USMS registration card are acceptable proof-of-age documents. Do not mail or hand-deliver any proof-of-age documents to the Alabama Sports Festival. The coach/participants should have proof-of-age documents on hand at the event site. For Masters your USMS Registration card will constitute proof of age.

Youth Swimming Rules and Format

The youth events will be governed by USA Swimming, Inc. (USA) rules and regulations. All events will be timed finals.

Swimmers are limited to enter four (4) individual events and one (1) relay. Please enter with yard times on the Registration Chart in the space beside the Event Description. Swimmers entered with no time will be seeded in the slow heats.

Masters Swimming Rules and Format

The Masters events will be governed by U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) rules and regulations. All events will be timed finals. All Masters swimmers may compete in up to 5 events. Entry fee of $15 is for a maximum of 4 events. A fifth event may be added for an additional $5. Swimmers may not exceed 5 events in one day. Please enter with yard times on the Registration Chart in the space beside the Event Description. Swimmers entered with no time will be seeded in the slow heats.

Awards

Individual

Alabama Sports Festival State Games Medal awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each event. Ribbons awarded for 4th, 5th, and 6th place in each event.

Team

Team trophy will be presented to the 1st and 2nd place team in both Summer Recreational and Year Round Divisions. The top six places will score as follows: 1st place-7 points, 2nd place-5 points, 3rd place-4 points, 4th place-3 points, 5th place-2 points, and 6th place 1 point.

Reservations for the LSC Times and Sanctioning Chairs’ Workshop are due Feb. 1. The workshop will be held March 12-14 at the Omni Austin in Austin, Texas. Topics to be addressed in the workshop include: Looking at a meet from beginning to end; types of meets; how to process in SWIMS; keeping LSC records in SWIMS and learning about new features/reports in SWIMS.

Olympians Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Katie Hoff (Towson, Md.) took home the men’s and women’s high-point award Monday at the Southern California Grand Prix in Long Beach, Calif. Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) took home one gold medal in the 100y fly and a total of three meet records were broken on the final night of competition.

Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) claimed the gold in the 400y IM Sunday night at the Southern California Grand Prix in Long Beach, Calif. Phelps held off Japan’s Hidemasa Sano in the final race of the night to take home his second gold medal of the meet. Three meet records also fell Sunday night with strong performances by Katie Hoff (Towson, Md.), Japan’s Kosuke Kitajima, and Rebecca Soni (Plainsboro, N.J.).

2008 Olympian Chloe Sutton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and USA Swimming National Team member Robert Margalis (St. Petersburg, Fla.) placed first in the women’s and men’s 1000y free Friday on the first night of competition at the Southern California Grand Prix. The meet, taking place at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif., runs through Monday, January 18.

Grevers wins double gold at Southern California Grand Prix 19 Jan 2010, 4:39 pm

Olympian Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) took home two gold medals Saturday night on the second day of competition at the 2010 Southern California Grand Prix in Long Beach, Calif. Grevers won gold in both the men’s 100y free and 200y back while Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) took home one gold in the 500y free, his only event of the night.

Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps and Rebecca Soni and other members of the USA Swimming National Team will compete Jan. 15-18 at the Southern California Grand Prix in Long Beach, Calif. The meet will take place at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool and is the second stop in the eight-meet 2009-2010 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series.

FINA issues final 2010 suit list 8 Jan 2010, 3:46 pm

On January 4, 2010, FINA, the international governing body for the sport, issued its final list of suits approved for use in competition in 2010. However, USA Swimming expects to receive further guidance from FINA later this month regarding the list. Until such time as we receive that guidance, USA Swimming will continue to allow all swimsuits which are either listed on the final FINA list or meet the criteria below.

On Wednesday morning, USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus issued the following statement on the hiring of new U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun. Blackmun is scheduled to be introduced to media at a press conference in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Wednesday.

Deadline for National Team Distance Challenge extended 8 Jan 2010, 3:45 pm

The USA National Team challenges American swimmers to the National Team Distance Challenge. The challenge is to swim a 1650 for time between Dec.18 and Jan. 11, 2010 and submit the time to be ranked against all others taking the challenge across the nation. A swimmer may submit one time from a competition or from a practice time trial during the challenge period.

Even though his birth certificate states differently, Michael Alexandrov knows in his heart – and in the pool – he is 100 percent American. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Alexandrov immigrated to the United States in 1994. Now he competes on behalf of what he has called his home country the majority of his life.
